No. Dettifoss is roughly 600 kilometres from Reykjavik by road, which is a long day's drive one way, and no day tour exists. The departures that reach the falls from Reykjavik are six and seven-day circuits of the island, and they give Dettifoss between thirty minutes and two hours.

The west side, on Route 862. It is the paved road, it has the car park with toilets, and the path from it continues to Selfoss. The east side on Route 864 is gravel, shut all winter, and none of the listed departures uses it.

In summer it is easy: about a kilometre of level gravel each way, roughly ten minutes, with a marked route the national park rates as easy. From autumn to spring the last stretch is wet rock that freezes, and travellers have described needing spikes. Guides on several of these departures carry them.

Waterproofs, and boots with grip rather than trainers. The spray from a hundred metres of falling water reaches the lower viewpoint, so anything not waterproof gets wet, and the rock underfoot is smooth and often running with water. There are toilets at the west-side car park. There is nothing else: no food, no drink, no shelter and no shop, on either side. Plan for that before you leave Akureyri or Mývatn.

Closer than most people expect, which is the point and also the risk. There is no railing along much of the rim, the rock is wet from spray and it freezes for a good part of the year. Stay back from the lip, watch children closely and keep to the marked routes.

It is not in winter service between January and the beginning of April, which is not the same as closed. The road is paved and is not barriered; it simply is not routinely ploughed or monitored in those months, and it opens when conditions allow. Travellers reach the falls in February and March most years.

June to August for flow, light and open roads; September for colour and quieter viewpoints. Mid-June gives more than twenty-three hours of daylight at the falls' latitude. January and February give under five hours and a road that is not in winter service.

The sky over the canyon is as dark as any in Iceland, so in principle yes between September and March. In practice none of the listed departures is a northern lights tour, and the ones that reach Dettifoss finish well before dark. Treat the aurora as something to chase from Akureyri, not from the falls.

It depends what you measure, and both answers are honestly held. Vatnajökull National Park and Visit North Iceland both call it Europe's most powerful; Wikipedia calls it the second most powerful after the Rhine Falls. The Rhine Falls carries more water over a 23-metre ledge, while Dettifoss puts 193 cubic metres a second over 44 metres — multiply the two and they are within a couple of per cent of each other.

Because it is glacial. The Jökulsá á Fjöllum leaves Vatnajökull carrying rock flour ground off the bedrock, and that silt turns the water grey-brown all the way to the sea. It is the thing first-time visitors are least prepared for, and it is why the spray photographs the way it does.

It comes from the Icelandic detta, to fall or collapse, and foss, waterfall — so the collapsing falls. Icelandic place names tend to be descriptive rather than poetic. Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss, its neighbours on the same river, are named the same way.

The opening sequence of Prometheus (2012) was filmed there, with the falls standing in for a primordial Earth. Ridley Scott used the canyon precisely because it looks like nowhere inhabited. It is still the shot most people recognise before they know the name.

A ten-metre waterfall on the same river about a kilometre upstream, wide and made of many separate strands rather than one curtain. The signpost on the west side puts it 0.6 kilometres from the junction, against 0.2 for Dettifoss. It is the stop most day tours skip and the one worth walking on for.

A twenty-seven-metre waterfall about two kilometres downstream of Dettifoss, deeper into the canyon. It is seen from a rim viewpoint on the east side rather than from beside the water. Most visitors never see it, because the east road is closed for much of the year.

Vatnajökull National Park restricts drone flying, and rules differ by area and by season for the sake of nesting birds and other visitors. Check the park's current guidance before you travel rather than assuming. Guided departures will not build a drone stop into the day.

Through the summer, and the lake is named for them — Mývatn means midge lake. The clouds are thickest on still, warm days in June and July, and the lake midge does not bite. A head net costs very little and makes the Skútustaðagígar walk far more pleasant.
