If your call is comfortably long and you are staying ashore afterwards, a general Dettifoss tour from Akureyri is a perfectly good choice. If your day ends when the ship leaves, it is not.
You get: pier pickup, a guide, a return guarantee, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Two of the four include a packed lunch with a sandwich and water.

Allow half an hour to disembark at each end. An eight-hour call is seven hours ashore, which is why an excursion timed to sailings is a different product from a day tour that happens to run eight hours.
If your call is under eight hours, do not book a Dettifoss excursion and hope. The driving alone is four hours and the margin is not there. Take a Goðafoss and Mývatn day instead and see what is genuinely reachable.
