Dettifoss from a Cruise Ship: Doing It in a Port Day and Getting Back
Short answer. Four departures leave from the Akureyri cruise pier, carry a return-to-ship guarantee, and take seven to eight hours. One refunds in full if your ship never docks. Check which of Akureyri's two berths you are using before you disembark, not after.
A port day is the hardest way to see Dettifoss, and a Dettifoss shore excursion is the one product built around that problem. The falls are two hours from the pier in each direction, which leaves very little slack in an eight-hour call — and four of the departures listed are built around exactly that problem.
Is it worth it on a port day?
Yes, with one condition: book a departure that leaves from the pier rather than one that collects from hotels. The pier departures are timed to sailings, they carry return guarantees, and their operators know which berth you are at. A general Akureyri day tour does not have any of that built in.
Akureyri has more than one cruise berth
This is the detail that catches people out and it takes one sentence to solve. Ships dock at either Tangabryggja or Oddeyrarbryggja, and the meeting point differs:

Give the operator your ship's name when you book. Every one of these departures asks for it, and it is how they know which side of the harbour to send a vehicle to.
⚠ If your ship does not dock. It happens in North Iceland in the shoulder season, and it is a solved problem rather than a risk you carry. One of these departures refunds in full if the ship fails to dock, and all four refund in full on 24 hours' notice, so a changed itinerary is not a lost fare. None of the four reaches Hafragilsfoss, which sits on the east rim behind a road that is shut for most of the cruise season — if that is on your list, it is a self-drive summer errand rather than a port-day one.
The pattern is worth reading. The cheapest attempts the whole Diamond Circle and gives the falls eighty minutes. The most expensive of the four does fewer stops and gives them ninety. Two include a packed lunch, which on a port day matters because you cannot rely on being back for the ship's lunch service.
What a return-to-ship guarantee actually means
It means the operator commits to having you back before sailing, and organises the day so that the last stop is close to the pier rather than at the far end of the route. One operator states plainly that it returns at least forty minutes before departure, and usually sixty. It does not mean the ship will wait for you if you go off on your own, so stay with the group.
What to bring off the ship
- Waterproofs. The lower path at Dettifoss is inside the spray, and there is nowhere to dry off.
- Boots with grip. Ship shoes are the wrong footwear for wet basalt, and from autumn to spring it is frozen wet basalt.
- Something to eat, unless your departure includes lunch. There is no café at the falls.
- Your ship's name and your berth, written down.
- Warm layers. The canyon rim is exposed even when the harbour is still.
If you would rather not do the whole circle
Two of the four concentrate on the Mývatn side and give the falls longer, and two attempt all five Diamond Circle stops. The private option, and when it makes sense
One departure is private and priced per group, at $2,242 for up to four travellers over ten hours. On a port day its real advantage is not comfort but control: one traveller fitted a ten-hour itinerary into the seven hours their ship allowed, choosing which stops survived. For a party of four with a short call, that flexibility is worth more than it looks on the price tag.
How the timings actually work
An eight-hour call is not eight hours ashore. Allow half an hour to disembark at each end and you have seven, which is why an eight-hour excursion timed to sailings is a different product from an eight-hour day tour that happens to leave from the same town.

If your call is under eight hours, do not book a Dettifoss excursion on hope. Take the Goðafoss and Mývatn version and come back another year, or look at what is genuinely reachable on what is near Dettifoss.
What the four have in common, and where they differ
All four leave from the pier, all four carry a return guarantee, and all four refund in full on 24 hours' notice. They differ on three things that matter: how many minutes you get at the waterfall, whether lunch is included, and whether the day attempts Ásbyrgi and Húsavík or stays on the Mývatn side.
The one with wheelchair access is a minibus rather than a coach and returns at least forty minutes before sailing. The one that includes a climb to a crater rim gives the falls ninety minutes and feeds you. The cheapest attempts everything and still manages eighty minutes at Dettifoss.
Before you book
Check your call time against the tour length with an hour to spare, not ten minutes. Confirm the berth. Ask whether the operator carries spikes if you are sailing between October and May. And read roads and access if you are travelling in the shoulder season, because the road decides the day before the ship does.
